By Train

For scenic beauty, few routes can compete with Amtrak's service from New York to Montreal (800 872-7245). The train leaves from New York City's Grand Central Station in the morning and traverses the Hudson River before reaching the North Country, where it makes stops in Glens Falls, Whitehall, Ticonderoga, Port Henry, Westport, Port Kent, Plattsburgh, and Rouses Point. Because of the rural nature of these areas, it is necessary to arrange for rental cars or car service in advance.

Scenic train rides are available seasonally from restored stations in North Creek, Saranac Lake, Lake Placid and Thendara south of Old Forge. Vistas of peaks, rushing rivers, deep woods and wildlife highlight rides in restored cars. For schedules and ticket prices for the Upper Hudson River Railroad in North Creek, visit www.upperhudsonrivverrr.com or call 518 251-5334. For information about the moose River excursions from Thendara, Utica to Thendara service or Saranac Lake to Lake Placid service, visit www.adirondackrr.com or call 315 369-6290.
